Clare and the Silence of San Damiano
The little church Francis rebuilt became home to St. Clare and her sisters for forty years.
San Damiano is where Francis heard the crucifix speak, and the first church he repaired with his own hands. In 1212 it became the home of Clare of Assisi, who left her noble family to follow the poor Christ.
A life hidden and fruitful
Clare and her sisters lived there in prayer, work and strict poverty. She defended the “privilege of poverty” for her community and wrote the first rule for women religious composed by a woman.
The Canticle’s cradle
Ill and almost blind, Francis stayed near San Damiano in 1225, and there, by tradition, began the Canticle of the Creatures. Clare died at San Damiano in 1253.
For reflection
Where in my day can I make a small San Damiano — a few minutes of silence before the cross?
