St. Francis of Assisi

Born in Assisi around 1181, Francis left a comfortable life to embrace poverty and serve the poor and the sick. He founded the Order of Friars Minor and, with St. Clare, inspired the Poor Clares. He died in 1226 and was canonised in 1228.
